My niece and I had so much fun foraging along the shore last week. We found beach plums. I have always wanted to pick beach plums but never found them when they were ripe.

We picked the darkest ones.

Between these shrubs and a few we found on another shore, our family picked enough for jelly.

I love making jam in every season, but this is the first time I ever made jelly. These tiny plums have pits. We cooked them on the stove in a pot with a bit of water until the skins burst and the fruit softened. Then we strained the hot pulp and juice through about 6 layers of cheesecloth. We used the juice for our jelly, following the directions for making plum jelly using Sure Gel. It's delicious. Mmmmm.....beach plum jelly. Pure seaside summer on your toast.

I have not noticed beach plums growing... now I will certainly be on the look out! I love that you mad jam with them. I am noticing an incredible amount of rose hips at the beach.
Hi, Nicole! Please tell me what you do with rosehips. Should I make jelly or syrup? My niece and I tried making tea and it was too weak. love, Beth
I just turned in a book back to the Library about jam/jelly making and the main story I remember is her fond memories of beach plums and how protective people were when they found the plum patch. It was quite humorous!
Dear Kelly Ann, I'm not telling where my plum patch is, either! love, Beth
I had no idea there was so much to forage at the beach! It looks lovely!
Making jam with Mum, it brings back fond memories. I never had a taste for jam or jelly but it always looks so pretty with the light coming through the jars as it sets up. Take care.
The gorgeous and evocative photos and your words made me heart SING!
Thank you dear Beth,
