My daughter and I got to work on her quilt together over her winter break. We took all of the crazy pieces which we had made and squared them with a template. We decided to let the squares in the middle drift off-center. This will make the squares dance about in a lively way.
I recently bought some red fabric for the grid which will hold the squares together, and cut it into strips. We decided that the quilt was coming out too small, so we pieced some long colorful strips for the border.
I got out my rotary cutter and we made some big piles of colors in different widths so that we could work rapidly on making the strips, and have plenty of choices for making intuitive color combinations.
We made the fabrics converse with one another. Look at how all the fabrics in this section have something to say to the floral fabric second from the left.
The fish fabric is the boss of this section. It used to be part of a skirt of mine. Many of the fabrics in this quilt mean something special. Some are leftovers from tiny dresses of my girl's, from when she was little. There are scraps from the quilt I made for her when she was three. Some are flannel scraps from our recent lovey project. Some are fabrics from waldorf doll clothes, and other quilting projects.
These two floral fabrics hold hands very well.
These cats are peering at the fabrics around them, making sure that the colors we picked match them.
I like multi-colored fabrics like this floral, which bring different patterns and colors together harmoniously.
We had fun with aqua in this section. The polka-dots provided some good suggestions for which color combinations would be lively and fun on each side of them.
I may do another quilt soon using just these fun fabric strips. It is much quicker than crazy quilting.
As soon as I can get back to the studio for a few days, I think I will be able to finish the top! I want my daughter to be able to cuddle under this quilt at college before the cold winter is over. I hope that being wrapped up in it will remind her of my hugs.
